Summer Days at Rella’s Spielhaus: Music, Movement, and Discovery in German and English

Summer in New York City has its own special rhythm — long sunny mornings, playground adventures, stories, music drifting through the classroom, and children discovering the world together. At Rella’s Spielhaus, our Summer Camp brings all of these moments together in an immersive German-English environment filled with creativity, movement, and exploration.

Each week, the classroom transforms into a new world. One week, the children might travel back in time to explore medieval castles and brave “Ritter,” another week they may discover the music of Mozart, learn about whales and dinosaurs, or bake traditional German specialties during “Wir Backen.” Through stories, songs, arts & crafts, movement, science experiments, music, and hands-on activities, language learning happens naturally throughout the day.

Circle Time remains at the heart of our mornings, bringing everyone together through singing, conversation, storytelling, and shared discovery. Whether listening to live music, dancing to “Karneval der Tiere,” learning about the work of New York firefighters, or exploring the human body during “Anatomie” week, the children are encouraged to engage with each topic in active and meaningful ways.

Summer Camp at Rella’s Spielhaus also reaches far beyond the classroom walls. Weekly field trips and neighborhood outings are an important part of our program and help children experience New York City with curiosity and confidence. Throughout the summer, our campers explore museums, parks, playgrounds, and exciting neighborhood destinations together — from the MET Museum and the Museum of Natural History to neighborhood fire stations and Central Park adventures.

Outdoor time is an essential part of camp life. From playground visits and nature discoveries in Central Park to reenacting scenes from “Karneval der Tiere” through movement and imaginative play in the courtyard, the children enjoy plenty of opportunities to move, explore, and simply enjoy being together outdoors.

At the same time, quieter moments remain just as important: reading together, listening closely during story time, baking side by side, or concentrating deeply on an arts & crafts project. This balance between activity, creativity, routine, and rest helps create a warm and familiar rhythm that allows children to feel both comfortable and inspired.

Above all, Summer Camp at Rella’s Spielhaus is about joyful learning, friendship, imagination, and creating meaningful summer memories together — right in the heart of Manhattan.
